The pictures are really good and funny. My favorite one is the one at the very back which shows "Nickerbacher on Tour" and shows where Nickerbacher is performing each month, like "Funny Fortress", "House of Ha Ha", and the "Giggle Gallery". I like it when Nickerbacher becomes a comedian because he is following his dream that he's been wanting a long time. I liked it when the dragon called the Prince, (whose real name is "Prince Happenstance"), Prince Fancypants. That was funny. I didn't quite get the joke that went "How do you like this new floor? It's reinforced 'cause during rehearsal, it cracked." My Mom had to explain it.
The lesson is to follow your dreams because that is what will make you happy.
The book was really good and funny. The pictures were fun to look at. I would give it 4 stars. I would recommend this book to boys and girls around my age (5 to 10) and kids who like dragons.
MOM SAYS:
"Nickerbacher, The Funniest Dragon" is a wonderful picture book featuring a relatable main character in the dragon, Nickerbacher as well as a host of unique secondary characters; colorful, kid-friendly illustrations; many humorous and poignant moments; and, an important underlying message about setting aside your fears and self-doubt to pursue your dreams. I recommend this book to children ages 5 to 10.

This book by Terry John Barto has a lively pace and funny jokes that mesmerize the young reader, the younger ones being read to and the older ones who can now read to themselves and to one another. The illustrations are carefully rendered in a lively, page-turning style that keeps up with the text pacing. The art depicts a pleasing and droll young dragon with Groucho Marx eyebrows and a prince who carries modern-day mints to toss to dragons. The book is a must in the classroom as it encourages young readers from 7 to 10 or so to keep picking up books. Teachers will no doubt hear a lot of jokes after introducing this book and can use it to set up a little writing unit about humor, maybe even have children make their own illustrated comedic books.

A great book about being yourself. I wish I had a book like this when I was a kid. This is a story adults will relate to and has a great message for kids. Not since The Lion King has there been such a heartwarming father/son story! It nice to introduce my son to reading with a book that he connects with… and my daughter absolutely loves Nickerbacher.

Unfortunately my husband followed what his Father told him rather than his dreams and he has been successful in some ways in spite of himself, but he has always wished he had followed his dreams and not his Fathers.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I want to also mention the art work in this book is great colorful and imaginative, any child would love to look at the this book and find new things in the art work each time they look through it as there is so much going on for a child to see in the art work! I love this book and any child would and I love the message!!
As found here on good reads: A dragon named Nickerbacher guards a princess "because his papa told him to." However, he practices his jokes on Princess Gwendolyn, as he yearns to be a stand-up comedian. The young dragon gets up the nerve to tell his papa about his dream and is sternly reminded of his dragonly duty. Later that day, Prince Happenstance arrives for the princess and repeatedly challenges the dragon to fight. The opponents manage to find common ground and Nickerbacher leaves for the big city to pursue his dream.
Nickerbacher is the only dragon who wants to make people laugh. And in the process, he encourages the prince (and kids) to be themselves and follow their dreams.

There's plenty to recommend in Nickerbacher: The Funniest Dragon, a comical dragon story that sports exceptionally colorful pages, fun drawings throughout by Kim Sponaugle, and a tale that lends particularly well to parental read-aloud for kids looking for stories about dragons. It's a 34-page saga of a sweet-tempered (but fierce-looking) dragon who is charged with guarding a princess - but his dreams are quite different than his task; for he longs to be a stand-up comic instead: something that clearly doesn't lend to his dragon stature and his allotted task in life.
Nickerbacher only wants to make everyone laugh, and his princess charge is supportive of his dreams; but he still believes them impossible, until a prince appears who harbors his own impossible dream.
"It doesn't matter what I think. It's what you know in your heart that matters." This is the underlying lesson in a whimsical, fun story that is simply delightful to read and supported by vibrant, fun illustrations: everything a parent could wish for in an entertaining picture book with an inspirational message.

I am so excited about this new book. How fun is a dragon who becomes a standup comedian. I really enjoyed the cute little jokes like "Why did it take so long to cross the road" "Cause I'm always a draggin." The Princess is appreciative of Nickerbacher's humor and so will kids of all ages. The story is well written and the illustrations are outstanding.

Nickerbacher, the Funniest Dragon, had a huge problem. His father had assigned him to guard the princess. But Nickerbacher didn't want to guard the princess—and the princess didn't want guarding. Nickerbacher wanted to be a stand-up comedian—but who ever heard of a dragon who was a comedian? So Nickerbacher practices his jokes on the princess—"Why did I cross the road?" "Because I was a-draggin'."

Deb's Dozen: The Dragon, Princess, and Prince: A Comedian, Runaway Bride, and Baseball Player?Nickerbacher, the Funniest Dragon, had a huge problem.
Princess Gwendolyn wanted to run away with Prince Happenstance (whom Nickerbacher promptly called Prince FancyPants). What should they do? What could they do? Did they have the courage to reach for their dreams? When the Prince comes to get the Princess, Nicherbacher tries out his jokes on him. The prince tells Nickerbacher he's supposed to scare princes, not make them laugh.
Gwen convinces Nickerbacher to tell his father he wants to be a stand-up comedian—that didn't go well! Nickerbacher finds out Prince Happenstance wants to be a baseball player, but he was born a Prince—that doesn't go well either. What to do? Where to go? What about their obligations?
Terry John Barto has written a delightful children's story about following your dreams—about daring to dream—about living your dreams and about having the courage to stand up to opposition. Children of all ages will appreciate this story about the dragon, the princess, and the prince. The illustrations by Kim Sponaugle greatly add to the enjoyment of the story. In addition to the book, Barto has an activity pack that complements the book available on his website, http://www.nickerbacher.com/activities/. You and your child will enjoy the antics of Nickerbacher, The Funniest Dragon.Four stars!

Nickerbacher felt called to be something no one else in his family was. He had a dream of making people laugh. He was doing what his family expected of him but his heart ached to do something more with his life. Then he meets Prince Happenstance who expects to fight him for the Princess he is guarding. Nickerbacher says there will be no fight. He breaking the mold of what is expected of a Dragon. He didn't have to be feared. Dragons like Prince's can do multiple things. This is a game changer for him and the Prince. They both have an opportunity to walk in a new role. This changes things for everyone.
The Prince talks about his dreams and can understand Nickerbaches predicament. He gives him the courage to step into his calling. He says to the dragon, "You seem brave enough to do something about it."
This is a funny story that's colorfully illustrated, with a good message about following your heart and being true to who God made you to be and not trying to be something you aren't. I highly recommend this book.
I liked this story about following your dreams. This author has a great website where kids can down load an activity kit – maze – word scramble – Door Hangers – Put events in order. I liked that the kids can go beyond the book in having reading fun!

Nickerbacher is a green and blue dragon and although he is the best kind of dragon, Nickerbacher has a PROBLEM! His father expects him to do what most dragons do: breathe fire and protect princesses but what he really wants to do is tell jokes and make people laugh. Nickerbacher especially wants to make Princess Gwendolyn laugh and when he tells her this, she encourages him to talk to his father. Before this can happen, however, Nickerbacher learns that Prince Happenstance is wanting to take the princess away from her guarded tower and Nickerbacher is faced with the task of preventing this. His methods are somewhat unconventional as he tries talking to the prince and telling him jokes. This conversation with Prince Happenstance shows him that the prince has a dream also. He would rather be an athlete than a dragon-slaying prince.
Nickerbacher's own dream is eventually realized when he is given the chance to perform on a stage and to tell his somewhat 'corny' jokes to a live audience.
Terry John Barto has given young readers a fun story that encourages them to set goals and work hard. He has also provided a link to an eight-page activity book that can be downloaded for further enjoyment. Older readers will also enjoy reading about this lovable and funny dragon.

"Why did it take me forever to cross the road? Because I'm always a-draggin!"
But dragons don't perform comedy. Dragons fight knights. Dragons breathe fire. Dragons do dragon-things.
"
Nickerbacher is a dragon with bushy eyebrows who spends his days and nights lazing before a tall tower, guarding the fair maiden entrapped within, the set-up for many a standard fairy-tale. But Nickerbacher doesn't want to be part of a standard fairy tale, he'd rather be out preforming stand-up comedy at a nightclub."Why did it take me forever to cross the road? Because I'm always a-draggin!"
But dragons don't perform comedy. Dragons fight knights. Dragons breathe fire. Dragons do dragon-things.
"Every dragon has a duty to guard princesses!" growls his frowning father, a much larger dragon whose eyebrows aren't even a tad bushy.
"But I want to tell jokes!" Nickerbacher pleads.
His father isn't having it.
Nickerbacher seems resigned to this life when finally that other standard storybook trope, the brave knight, makes his appearance. His name is Prince Happenstance, and he has come to rescue the princess and to do battle!
Nickerbacher, however, has only one weapon in his arsenal. "I'm a comedian. I'll slay you with laughter, Prince Fancypants!"
The art by Kim Sponaugle is fun and expressive. I liked the design of all of the characters. She creates a convincing-looking dragon that works as well in a medieval setting as he does even after he's donned a loud bowtie and jacket, standing onstage before an audience of anachronistic theater-goers.
"You know what happened to the dragon whose dream came true?" he asks his adoring crowds. "He lived happily ever after."
Hm… seems I recall hearing that line in a movie somewhere… But perhaps this is a standard fairy tale after all!

The story behind Nickerbacher is a tale we all know. "You should go after your dreams." This time its surrounded by amusing illustrations (that dragon definitely has some dignified eyebrows!) and played out in simple, easy to understand words that a kindergartner could read on their own. However, given the (albeit still basic) level of the jokes, I can appreciate that a few of them were probably slipped in to make this book a bit easier for the adults to read.
The mini-reviewer thought very highly of this book. I thought it was okay, but nothing to be ecstatic about, so we met in the middle and decided to give this book a 4 out of 5 rating.
